5 Things To Do When Moving

Updated: Mar 2, 2024

There are a lot of things that you need to consider when moving. What do you cancel and when? How do you fit all of your items in your car to move? Can you even lift the furniture yourself? Do both homes need to be cleaned? Are your finances organized? Like I said - so much to consider and if you do not have a step-by-step plan, it can get stressful. When creating your plan, use this post to help ensure that you do not forget anything important. Here are 5 things to do when moving:

Empty Boxes

Cancel Recurring Programs

If you are moving, you have a lot of things on your plate and cancelling or changing your subscription services may fall to the side during the craziness leading up to (and on) moving day. Those recurring charges will keep mounting on your credit card, even if you forget about them, so make sure that cancelling or changing them is on your to-do list. I recommend getting on it ahead of time by cancelling/changing them about a month or so before moving day. For example, if your gym is not convenient to your new home, a lot of gyms require a 30-day notice for cancellations. So, a month beforehand would be perfect! Another side to this is recurring charges that might be cancelled/unapproved if your billing address has changed. An important one that you need to consider is medication! In order to cover all of your bases, compile a list of charges and make an effort to log in to your online account or call the companies to give them a heads up on cancellations/billing address changes, so that nothing goes awry.

Organize Your Finances

Part of the above does pertain to organizing your finances, but other important tasks related to finances are often forgotten about in the whirlwind of moving, as well. Losing track of bills and invoices among boxes and clutter is very easy to do. Make sure that you don’t lose anything by getting organized and creating a system that works for you! For the time being at least, it can really help to set up autopay so that you do not miss most of your recurring bills. At the same time, if you have autopay set up, you run the risk of having these companies take money out of your account that was not warranted (since you are moving to a new home), so consider both sides to that situation. Another system that you could use is writing down all of your expensenses and bills and then designating them to certain people in your family, or at least writing down the due dates and where to pay (on your calendar).

Hire A Moving Team

An essential for a lot of people during a move is to hire a professional moving team. Hiring someone else to do all of the heavy lifting for you will save your back AND it will also save you a lot of time and stress. A team such as Fresh Start - The Moving Crew can do it all for you so that you can mark one more thing off of your to-do list ahead of time. Just make sure to mark down when they are coming to grab your things so that you can stay organized! Fresh Start - The Moving Crew is a residential and commercial moving company in Worcester MA. James Cooper, who is the owner of Fresh Start - The Moving crew says, “We always strive to put the customer first. That’s how we went from using a borrowed truck and trailer to serving over 1,000 customers in our first 3 years of being in business.”

Fresh Start - The Moving Crew will care for your belongings like they would their own. When you are shopping for a mover, you want someone that knows what they are doing and does it well. How do you make sure of this? One way is to look at reviews! Fresh Start - The Moving Crew has amazing reviews. Do a quick Google search and you will find them. You will also see that they are a top rated business on HomeAdvisor, they are accredited with the BBB, and they have the “People Love Us” badge on Yelp, due to their five-star rating!! Another way that you can make sure that you are using a reputable moving company is to look at their employees. Are they using subcontractors? Make sure they are not. The team at Fresh Start - The Moving crew is tight-knit, well-trained, respectful, and professional. You do not have to deal with random movers when you book them! Instead, you will find a great team that is experienced, equipped to handle your move, customer-focused, and competitive when it comes to pricing. They have 8 years of experience to back up their amazing reviews and service. To secure your move with Fresh Start - The Moving Crew, email them at reservations@freshstartmovingcrew.com.

Create A To-Do List

Another tip for staying organized! In addition to listing out the things you need to pay, creating a detailed to-do list can really help when it comes to staying on-track with everything that you need to do. From paying bills and packing to creating a day-of timeline and cleaning both your old and new homes, creating and checking off your to-do list will allow you to stay on track, without forgetting any essentials.

Change Your Address

Next up: change your address and forward all of your mail to your new home. The US Postal Service offers an online form to quickly change an address for you mail, but don’t wait until the last minute to fill it out! Make sure that you fill out the form about two weeks or so before your move so that it can get through the system in time.
